Having trouble analyzing documents? Here are the most common issues and how to fix them.

"Invalid API Key" Error

Cause

Your API key is incorrect, revoked, or has expired.

Solution

1. Go to your AI provider's dashboard (OpenAI, Gemini, or Claude)

2. Verify your API key is still valid and active

3. If revoked, generate a new one

4. Copy the entire key exactly (watch for extra spaces)

5. Update it in CLU Settings

6. Test again

Prevention

  • Save your API key in a secure password manager
  • Set spending limits to prevent accidental revocation
  • Check your provider's dashboard monthly

"Rate Limit Exceeded" Error

Cause

You've made too many API requests in a short time.

Solution

1. Wait 5-10 minutes before trying again

2. Try analyzing shorter documents

3. Space out your analyses throughout the day

4. Consider upgrading your API plan if analyzing many documents

Prevention

  • Check your provider's rate limits
  • OpenAI: Higher plans have higher limits
  • Gemini: Free tier has daily limits
  • Claude: Request higher limits through Anthropic

"Analysis Timeout" Error

Cause

The document is too large or the AI provider is slow.

Solution

1. Try a shorter section of the document

2. Copy/paste key sections instead of the whole policy

3. Try during off-peak hours (early morning)

4. Switch to a different AI provider temporarily

Prevention

  • Analyze policies in sections if they're very long
  • Test with a short sample first
  • Use Claude for long documents (better performance)

Extension Not Working

Cause

The extension is disabled, not installed, or conflicting with another extension.

Solution

1. Check if CLU is enabled in your browser's extension settings

2. Pin the extension to your toolbar if it's hidden

3. Restart your browser

4. Disable other privacy extensions temporarily

5. Reinstall CLU if it's corrupted

Prevention

  • Restart your browser weekly
  • Keep CLU and other extensions updated
  • Only use trusted extensions

"No API Key Configured" Error

Cause

You haven't set up an API key yet.

Solution

1. Open CLU settings

2. Select your preferred AI provider

3. Paste your API key

4. Click Save

5. Test with a sample document

Prevention

  • Set up your API key immediately after installing CLU
  • Save a backup in your password manager

Slow Analysis

Cause

Large document, slow network, or high provider load.

Solution

1. Close other tabs/applications to free up memory

2. Check your internet connection

3. Try a different AI provider

4. Analyze in smaller sections

5. Try again during off-peak hours

Prevention

  • Use smaller documents when possible
  • Analyze important policies when provider load is low
  • Use Claude for consistent performance

"Document Not Found" Error

Cause

CLU can't access the webpage or PDF.

Solution

1. Make sure the page has fully loaded

2. Right-click and select "Analyze with CLU" again

3. Try copying the text manually into CLU

4. Check if the website allows extensions

5. Try a different website temporarily to test

Prevention

  • Wait for pages to fully load
  • Some sites block extensions—use copy/paste method
  • Test on a known site first

Can't See CLU Icon

Cause

Extension is not installed or hidden in browser menu.

Solution

1. Go to your browser's extension page

2. Search for "CLU"

3. If not listed, reinstall from the web store

4. If listed, click the pin icon to show it in your toolbar

5. Refresh the webpage

Prevention

  • Pin CLU to your toolbar after installation
  • Enable notifications in settings
